Civil War Era 1860s Pistol Case Mother Of Pearl Eagle+Shield Very rare Early American case. Recently found in a New Paltz New York estate this box appears to me to be an early hand made dueling pistol or derringer/small colt pistol box with one section for the pistol or pistols, one for supplies and one for the cleaning rods etc. The box is salty and has a lot of wear and age.
It has a stunning period added union eagle with shield made out of mother of pearl, it appears to have been had carved. The only 2 issues with this piece is sometime long ago it was painted gold.Maybe 50 to 70s years ago possibly longer It still has a nice patina and age though. It also is missing a piece of wood from the back of the box not a vital piece but the piece on the top back this appears to have been gone for a very long time. It also has one very very old damage spot. On the wear someone either tried to break in or possibly a moose chew. It may be possible to bring it down to bear would again and see how it looks. Overall an interesting piece of civil war era history. Nail holding it together appear to either be hand made copper or brass nails.
Very unqie and odd piece. I can try to provide better images if needed of any specific areas.
